It's easy to run out of power on the Camino or when you're camping. That is why we have gathered a solid selection of power banks here, which is part of many packing list for the Camino.
Do you need a power bank on the Camino?
The short answer is NO. The Camino is full of hostels, cafes, and much more where you can charge your electronics. In addition, it is our recommendation that you go on outdoor journeys such as the Camino without having to be constantly connected. However, we often have a Powerbank with us when we travel. We experience, for better or for worse, that we have more need to charge our smartphone, camera, speaker and even laptop when we are on a trip. Yes, it is actually possible to charge your laptop with a power bank.
Electronics are improving all the time, and we ourselves have found that we are much more online on our latest Caminos than we were on the first. We get a better overview of the route, better music and better pictures. However, we were much more disconnected from the outside world on our first The Unity Way, so there are advantages and disadvantages to carrying a power bank. It quickly becomes just another device that you have to keep track of, and we like to travel as minimalist as possible.
Powerbanks are getting wilder all the time
When we look back at the power banks we brought a few years ago versus the ones you can find further up the page, there is a huge difference in quality. It is especially mAh that you should look for when you want to see how much a power bank can charge your device. mAh is the abbreviation for milliampere hour, and it is an indicator of the capacity of current on the power bank you choose. It didn't take long before the standard from 2.000 suddenly became 20.000, and power banks just keep getting wilder. Power bank with solar cells
Another thing that has become more and more popular is a power bank with solar cells. The ones we tested when we were going to walk the Camino the first time were far too big, heavy and expensive, but these are also constantly being improved. It has therefore become very common to bring a solar power bank with you when you either go camping, hiking or a festival. We are big supporters of power banks with solar cells, but we have not yet found an optimal one that is prioritized in our hiking backpack.
Outdoor Powerbank and much more
A power bank for outdoor can quickly become your friend in need. Almost all of us have experienced running out of power. Normally this is not a problem, but when you are out in the open it is often difficult to find a power source. We therefore recommend that you find a good outdoor power bank when, for example, you are going camping or will be away from a power source for an extended period.
In general, it is not something we recommend for the Camino, but we often include it as part of our packing list. When we have to cut back on items, however, it is one of the things that we often remove again from the back pack, as we tend to overpack with electronics.
